What is Ear Pinning / Corrections (Otoplasty)?
Ear Pinning and Ear Correction surgery is designed to reshape prominent ears, primarily to increase self-confidence and self-esteem, and can be performed on one or both ears.
The procedure is performed by making an incision in the back of the ear and then reshaping the cartilage of the ear, ensuring that the prominence of the ears is corrected as necessary.
Often these procedures are performed at private hospitals, but occasionally under the NHS. As ever, if the treatment was at a private facility, it is vital to confirm who is responsible should any problems occur, either the clinician individually or the Hospital, or perhaps both. This is often outlined in your Contract.
How can negligence cause issues during or after my Ear Pinning or Correction procedure?
Ear Pinning or Correction procedures are often performed successfully and with only expected minor side effects, which can include some soreness or numbness which will fade quite quickly.
There are however occasions where the procedure is perhaps not performed correctly due to negligence – it could be that the surgeon is inexperienced in doing the surgery, or that something went wrong that wasn’t accounted for beforehand, or even that you were not suitable for the surgery but this was performed regardless.
Any such negligence can lead to a procedure that is unsuccessful, and as a result, the following side effects may appear:
- An unnatural shape to the ears
- Excessive scarring
- Damage to the function of the ear
- An increased risk of infection and blood clots
It is important to note that not all undesired results are as a result of negligence and is sometimes a risk of the surgery, but if there has been unreasonable care, then you may be eligible for compensation.
What do I do if I believe I have been a victim of negligence?
If you believe that you have experienced negligence during or after your ear pinning or correction procedure, you will, of course, be feeling upset and hurt, and you will likely be in pain and need to undergo even more treatment to rectify the issues caused by the procedure.
