Vibration White Finger

What is Vibration White Finger?

Vibration White Finger (VWF), which is also known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), is an Industrial Disease caused by regular and continued use of vibrating tools such as drills, grinders, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, and mowers for extended periods of time over a number of months or years. Vibration White Finger is classed as a repetitive strain injury (RSI).

Your employer has a duty of care under The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 to ensure that you do not experience exposure to such excessive vibration whilst under their employment. Employment sectors that this is often an issue in include:

-    Construction

-    Mining

-    Forestry

-    Agriculture

Exposure to excessive vibration of machinery used in your employment can damage the blood vessels, nerves and joints in your body. You may also experience damage to your muscles as a result. Although you will often experience the symptoms of Vibration White Finger in your fingers and hands, they can also affect your arms and on occasions other parts of your body.

Some of the more common symptoms of VWF are:

-    A distinct whitening of your fingers and hands

-    Tingling sensations in those areas affected

-    Numbness

-    A noticed weakness in the affected areas

-    Increased sensitivity to cold

-    Loss of dexterity in your fingers and hands, meaning it is sometimes hard to undertake everyday tasks such as holding a cup of tea or brushing your teeth.

In our experience, we have found that working in the industries listed above many years ago could have resulted in the Vibration White Finger that you suffer from today.
